The Catalonia region, with Barcelona at its epicenter, has become a key hub for enthusiasts of both car and motorcycle racing. In the vicinity of the Catalan capital, there are several circuits that resonate with the thrill of adrenaline and the roar of engines, ranging from internationally renowned tracks to more intimate and specialised ones.
In this article, we will explore the circuits nearest to the city of Barcelona, looking at their features and highlighting the distinctive elements that characterize each of these racing tracks.
Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
Located in the towns of Montmeló and Granollers, about 32 kilometers northeast of Barcelona, the Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya has solidified its position as one of the most prominent circuits nationally and internationally. Thanks to its exceptional accessibility from Barcelona, being approximately 40 kilometers from Barcelona Airport and 70 kilometers from Girona Airport, the circuit has earned a privileged reputation in the automotive and motorcycle racing industry. It serves as the stage for the most prestigious competitions in both disciplines, annually attracting the best drivers on two and four wheels.
Since 1991, the track has uninterruptedly hosted the Formula 1 Grand Prix, and since 1992, it has also consistently held the Catalunya Motorcycle Grand Prix, both being the top competitions in car and motorcycle racing. In addition, the circuit hosts other important international championships in its sports calendar, such as the FIA World Rallycross Championship, the Superbike World Championship, the FIM JuniorGP, the Barcelona Speed Festival, the International GT Open, the Catalunya Motorcycle 24 Hours, and the European Le Mans Series (ELMS).
Regarding the technical specifications of the layout, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya stands out for its highly aerodynamic design, combining a long main straight with curves of varying speeds. With a total length of 4,675 meters, the circuit features a total of 16 turns, divided into 6 left turns and 8 right turns. Additionally, it has 50 garage boxes.
The layout is divided into three distinct sectors. The first sector, housing both the main straight and several long-radius curves, is characterized by its aerodynamic profile. The second sector, from before turn 4 to the end of the back straight, stands out as the most demanding section, intertwining aerodynamic demands with power. Turn number 9, known as Campsa corner, stands out as one of the most challenging, as any mistake in this section can compromise the exit onto the second longest straight of the circuit. The third and final sector is distinguished by its technical nature, featuring low-speed turns that demand stability in braking and optimal traction on exit.
