Barcelona is one of the most beautiful and stunning cities in the world, but there’s no light without darkness and this city that has more than 2.000 years of history and has witnessed some true horrors.
Call street
If you just wander over this street, you won’t feel anything strange, but you should know that you might be walking next to buried human bodies… An ancient tradition consisted in when the first stone of a house is placed, a body should be put next to it, or to mix the blood of a young person with the building materials. The bases of some of the houses still have bodies that every now and then show up for the horror of the people who discover them. In Call street more than a hundred bodies have been found and who knows how many more are to find.

The vamp of “El Raval”
The vamp of “El Raval” or also known as Enriqueta Martí. Mrs Marti was a woman who lived in the beginning of the 20th century and it’s the closest thing that Barcelona has been to have a Boogeyman.
She dedicated a great part of her life to kidnapping children and the “lucky” ones were sold to the higher classes for their rituals and to please their most savage impulses, the others were tortured, killed and their remains were mixed with liquids to make potions for rich people who bought it to achieve immortality.
She was found guilty and executed in 1913 and in her properties were found hundreds of children bones and body parts rotting. Her remains rest in a common pit in the Montjuic cemetery.
Barcelona’s Cathedral
One of the places that has witnessed the most horrors in this city, from wars, murders, executions and terrible punishments, such as the one that St. Eulalia received in the year 303 AD. Her breasts were cut off, her teeth ripped out and most of her skin peeled away.
Lastly, as if that was not enough…she was placed inside a wine barrel and filled with broken glass and rolled down the street for everyone to see. She was punished by the Romans for defending her christian beliefs.
La Boqueria
The famous market in the center of the city that now hosts many food stores and restaurants witnessed back in the year 1391 the Jewish massacre, were 300 Jews were murdered.
The story tells us that their bones were used to build what now is the second wall of Barcelona. ?? On that time there were many jew murdered because of the antisemitism of the time that was expanded through all Spain because of religious reasons. It ended when most of them surrendered and accepted the christian baptism.
Most of the city walls were destroyed by people of the city on between the 1854 and the 1873, but some remains can be found on the “Eixample Esquerre” and close to the Port of Barcelona.
